Warner Robins man hopes to expose volleyball to more girls in Central Georgia

Matthew Wilson is teaming up with an Atlanta volleyball organization to provide more opportunities for girls in Central Georgia

The National Federation of State High School Associations says that almost 450,000 girls played high school volleyball across the nation last year.

That survey also listed volleyball as the second most popular female sport in high school, right behind outdoor track and field.

However, in Central Georgia, many school districts are just breaking ground on their volleyball programs.

This year is Bibb County's first time having volleyball programs in their middle and high schools. Houston County offers the sport in their high schools, but not in middle school.

With the sport's growing popularity, girls often need to get an early start for their college volleyball dreams.

Coaching isn't Matthew Wilson's day job, but he's adding director of Tsunami Central Georgia Volleyball Club to his resume. He said it's because of his daughter, Laila.

"I want to play in college at Pepperdine," she said.

She's 12-years-old. She and her teammates all dream of playing Division I college volleyball.

At her age, Laila wouldn't be able to play if it weren't for club volleyball.

"The Southeast has been typically behind, excluding Florida, in the volleyball arena," her father said.

They live in Warner Robins, where volleyball isn't offered until high school. With club volleyball, girls can start playing as early as 10 years old.

"It's the fastest growing sport for females, and it's a great way for them to get exposure to college and maybe get college paid for," Matthew Wilson said.

Former collegiate coach Orlando Gonzalez said club volleyball is essential for college recruitment.

"If all you do is play school or scholastic volleyball, and you're not really doing much else the rest of the year, yeah you're going to be a little bit behind the 8 ball," Gonzalez said.

Club volleyball season starts in December and typically lasts through April. For Wilson, the time with his daughter is what he cherishes most.

"I use it as an opportunity to be able to spend time with my 12-year-old daughter who normally would not want to be around me," Wilson said.

Top Volley USA and Southern Strikers are other clubs that serve the Central Georgia area.

Tsunami Central Georgia is holding an information session about their club and tryouts on October 1 at 7:30 P.M. at Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins.
