'We stood strong:' Crisp Co. cleans up water damage to homes, crumbling bridges

Some people in Crisp County are drying out after flash flooding trapped them inside their homes

People in Crisp County are trying to recover after severe storms blew through on Sunday.

Homes need to be repaired, roads are still flooded and bridges are impassible.

All of Laurie Posey's furniture remains on cinder blocks. She rushed to put them there when the water started rising outside of her home.

“Yesterday I felt like I was in a fight or flight, no emotion, just trying to get things done,” said Posey.

She had fans out all over the house Monday trying to dry up the remaining water.

Posey says at one point, they received 6" of rain in an hour.

She says the water rose so fast she didn't know what to do, so she grabbed photos and worked to save the furniture. In the end, the water never got high enough to spill into the house.

Still, the Posey family couldn’t get out of their home because of the water. They had to wait for rescue boats to take them out of their homes.

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock says they will recover, but it will take time and even more money.

Hancock says crumbling bridges like the one on Ferry Landing could cost $700,000 to fix. It's the second recent weather hit to the county.

“Some of the damage we suffered yesterday was due to that weakening of Michael, we didn't break, we bent. Then yesterday, while bent, we had to take on another force and we did it too. We stood strong, and people in this community they gave it all,” said Hancock.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency is working with the Crisp County Sheriff's Office to make sure the roads and bridges are safe for people to drive on.
