Some members of the combat team returned Monday morning to Fort Stewart. They were welcomed with a ceremony

FORT STEWART, Ga. — It was a good start to the day for the families of soldiers on the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Some members of the team finally returned home from their deployment in Afghanistan Monday morning. They were there for around six months.

While in Afghanistan, a press release says the brigade worked on Operation Resolute Support. 13WMAZ reported last year the National Guard unit and its 2,200 members were headed to help train security forces there.

A return ceremony was held at Cottrell Field in Fort Stewart starting at 7 a.m. Maj. Gen. Tom Carden, adjutant general of the Georgia National Guard, and Brig. Gen. Randall Simmons Jr., commanding general of Georgia Army National Guard, were in attendance.

After the ceremony, families crowded the field to embrace their loved ones.

Some soldiers had returned earlier in June.
