2020 Georgia legislative session starts Monday: What some local lawmakers are focused on

Aside from balancing the state's finances, what other issues are on the table?

MACON, Ga. — On Monday, members of the Georgia House and Senate head back to the gold dome for the 2020 legislative session, one that House Speaker David Ralston says will be a "budget-cutting" year.

But aside from balancing the state's finances, what other issues are on the table?

Last year, the controversial heartbeat bill and the approval to grow and sell medical marijuana dominated state headlines.

This year, drafted legislation on gambling across the Peach State is already grabbing the attention of taxpayers and lawmakers.

House District 141 Rep. Dale Washburn says the proposed amendment could allow horse racing, sports betting, and casinos.

He's undecided on the issue, but thinks his constituents should have the right to vote on it.

Another hot button issue Washburn does have an opinion on? Sex trafficking.

"We anticipate some legislation to strengthen what prosecutors can do about it, and, of course, some other ways to try and combat it," says Washburn.

On the county level, Washburn is considering lobbying for an O-LOST, another penny sales tax that would generate cash for Macon-Bibb.

"We would spend half of the money raised on public safety, fire department and law enforcement, and that we would use the other half for a rollback of property taxes," says Washburn.

Washburn says he'd like to give the understaffed Bibb County Sheriff's Office more money after another year of violent crime, but he says he wants to change the bill to ensure that property taxes would stay low.

Other social issues topping the list of drafted bills? A proposal to allow guns in more parks and other public areas, harsher penalties for those performing gay conversion therapy, and dozens more.

The 2020 Georgia General Assembly convenes Monday morning in Atlanta. 13WMAZ's Randall Savage and Ashlyn Webb will be there.
