Officer Sam Blackmon, 42, holds up his award winning beer, now on draft at the Capitol Hop Shop.

A 19-year veteran of the Sacramento Police Department is also an award-winning beer brewer.

On Saturday, the Capitol Hop Shop featured five beers brewed by Officer Sam Blackmon. Blackmon and teammate Trevor Pratt competed in the midtown bar’s home brewing contest during Sacramento Beer Week back in May.

Their hazy pale ale called Fast and Loose won the contest, giving them rights to brew a bigger batch at San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewing. Those beers are now being tapped at local bars like the Capitol Hop Shop.

Blackmon says he began home brewing about six years ago. He started brewing as a way to decompress from his sometimes stressful job. The long-time police officer has since won several awards for his home brews. While he says he is planning to stick to police work as a day-job, he says he’d like to one day own a brewery of his own.
