LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A Burger King customer said he was charged $1,093.91 after trying to take advantage of the fast food chain’s penny Whooper Detour deal.

The promotion asks customers to go to a McDonald’s, open the Burger King app and order a Whopper sandwich for a penny. It runs through Wednesday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said when Boyce Harvey used the Whopper Detour in his phone app and went to get his sandwich, the restaurant wasn't able to find his order. When he chose another deal, he found out he was charged more than $1,000.

Harvey noticed the outrageous charge on his account after he left the restaurant, according to multiple media reports. It caused a large overdraft on his bank account.

Fox News and the Journal-Constitution said Harvey is working to sort out the error with Burger King.
