Mercer got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning as Jackson Ware singled home Trey Truitt from second base to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. But the Keydets would use back-to-back homers in the 3rd inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bears then had big time at bats from JT Thomas and Ware who each blasted solo shots to tie the game up in the 6th inning.
Mercer then took the lead and never looked back as they beat VMI 9-4 to split the series. Gibson becomes the 13th active NCAA Division 1 baseball coach to notch 500 wins at his alma mater. Mercer is now 30-15 overall and 9-8 in the Southern Conference.
