Georgia Tech football commit dies after being hit by train

Four-star recruit Bryce Gowdy passed away early Monday morning. He was supposed to start at Georgia Tech next month.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — A Georgia Tech football recruit passed away early Monday morning.

Four-star wide receiver Bryce Gowdy of Deerfield Beach, Florida died after being hit by a train, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Gowdy, 17, recently signed his national letter of intent to play for the Yellow Jackets and was set to early enroll at Georgia Tech in January 2020.

Head Coach Geoff Collins expressed his sympathy for Gowdy's loved ones on the Georgia Tech athletics website:

"Our entire Georgia Tech football family is devastated by the news of Bryce’s passing. Bryce was an outstanding young man with a very bright future. He was a great friend to many, including many of our current and incoming team members. On behalf of our coaches, players, staff and families, we offer our deepest condolences to Bryce’s mother, Shibbon, and his brothers, Brisai and Brayden, as well as the rest of his family members, his teammates and coaches at Deerfield Beach High School, and his many friends. Bryce and his family will always be a part of the Georgia Tech football family."

Gowdy tweeted his excitement about joining the Tech family the night before.

It's the second tragic death to plague the Yellow Jacket football program this year. In March, defensive lineman Brandon Adams passed after collapsing during practice for a step routine with his friends.
