Frankly Speaking: Freddie and Tiger's Triumphs

Freddie Freeman and Tiger Woods returned to the spotlight over the weekend after a five-year absence.

This is a column of opinion and analysis by 13WMAZ’s veteran news and sports anchor, Frank Malloy.

The year was 2013 -- two top athletes enjoying their time in the spotlight with no reason to anticipate the good times would end anytime soon.

Freddie Freeman played 147 games with the Braves that year, put up big numbers -- .319 batting average -- 109 RBIs, and, oh yeah, his team won the National League Eastern Division title.

Tiger Woods was also on a rampage -- PGA Tour Player of the Year and Top Money Winner and, oh yeah, he won 5 tournaments.

Then it all stopped -- injuries popped up and the wins and Division Titles dried up.

Fast forward to 2018 -- fourth weekend of September to be precise -- and there they were, back in the spotlight, back on the big stage, separated, ironically, by no more than 15 miles.

Freddie first, knocking in two runs in front of thousands of chopping fans to help his team win the Eastern Division Title.

Then, Tiger's turn -- finding fairways and draining putts to win the PGA Tour Championship while thousands roared and chanted his name.

And then they celebrated, both letting loose five years of doubts and frustrations.

And for a brief moment, their triumphs allowed us a chance to hit the pause button on everything happening around us and tip our hats to two men on a job well done.
