Athlete of the Week: Madisen Mitchum

Congratulations to this week's Athlete of the Week, Madisen Mitchum from Jones County High School.

13WMAZ headed out to Gray to meet with a sophomore who has been juggling being a leader on and off the field: Madisen Mitchum from Jones County High School.

If you're looking for Mitchum, your best bet would be out on the soccer pitch.

"It's basically my life. I do it 24/7. I travel the world doing it," she said.

It's become her passion, but Mitchum says this wasn't always the case.

She remembers a moment that changed everything -- a tied game where she was up for penalty kicks.

"So I didn't think I was going to make it, and after I shot it, I made it and everyone got all happy, and my coach picked me up and everything, and at that moment, I just kind of noticed that everything was meant to be, like this is where I was supposed to be," she said.

"That season, we won every game, and then this season, so far, she's scored 27 goals in eight games, so she's looking to set some records," said head coach Jessica Sowell.

From breakaways to goal kicks, she's not letting any opportunity pass her by.

"There's nobody that can catch her. She has such a powerful shot with a lot of accuracy," Sowell said.

Even though she's in the spotlight, Mitchum says the strength of her team is what really matters.

"I want to also help them get goals, you know, and I'd be a better leader to help them do it than it being all on me," she said.

But she's not just taking advantage of being a leader on the field, but in the classroom as well.

"If she makes anything less than a 95, she gets a little stressed out, so she loves being successful in everything she does," Sowell said.

Mitchum says juggling the two will be her key to getting to the next level.

"Because I know if I want to play college soccer that my grades have to be there, like no matter what. Coaches always told me like no matter how good of a soccer player you are, the grades are always what will get you there," Mitchum said.

With her eyes on the prize, she's not letting anyone get in the way of her shot.

Mitchum is working hard to play at the next level.

The two schools she's got her eyes on are the Air Force Academy and Western Kentucky.

Good luck to Mitchum as she gets a kickstart towards her future.
