TCU vs. Georgia: Breaking down their rosters as high school recruits

On paper, the Bulldogs far outmatch the Horned Frogs if you take the players' high school ratings for gospel.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — TCU and Georgia square off in the 2022 CFP National Championship Game on Monday, Jan. 9 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

The Bulldogs are 12.5-point favorites to hoist the trophy, and if you were to take the players' high school recruiting rankings for gospel, this point spread would definitely ring true.

We looked at the 247 composite scores on the TCU and Georgia 247 affiliates – which is an aggregate score for the three major recruiting sites: 247 Sports, Rivals.com and ESPN – to see the what each roster stacks up on paper.

Here is a breakdown of each roster and what "star" they were coming out of high school:

TCU

  • Number of 5-stars: 1
  • Number of 4-stars: 16
  • Number of 3-stars: 61
  • Number of 2-stars: 2
  • Number of 1-stars: 0
  • Number of unranked: 55

Georgia

  • Number of 5-stars: 15
  • Number of 4-stars: 53
  • Number of 3-stars: 22
  • Number of 2-stars: 3
  • Number of 1-stars: 0
  • Number of unranked: 38

There is something to be said for how coaches develop players, however. TCU would not be in the national championship game without developing the players it has brought in, regardless of what their high school recruiting ranking was.

But it does shed a light on why Georgia has become a perennial powerhouse in college football, with multiple appearances in the CFP and a championship in 2021.

For those curious, both teams' starting quarterbacks, Stetson Bennett for Georgia and Max Duggan for TCU, were both three-stars coming out of high school.

The highest-rated Bulldog in high school was five-star linebacker Nolan Smith, and the Frogs' top recruit was five-star Marcel Brooks, who transferred from LSU.
