Falcons sign DT Grady Jarrett to big contract extension

The Conyers, Ga., native had already signed a franchise tag for $15.2 million for next season.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons have signed defensive tackle Grady Jarrett to a big contract extension which will make both sides very happy.

The team confirmed that the four-year extension came in prior to the NFL's 4 p.m. negotiation deadline.

“As we have said since the end of the season, getting a deal done with Grady has been a priority and we are pleased to have accomplished that today," Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement from the team late Monday afternoon. "Grady is an integral part of our organization and we look forward to moving together for many years to come.”

The team did not confirm the terms of the deal but multiple reports indicated that the extension is for a $68 million price tag. The Conyers, Ga., native had already signed a franchise tag for $15.2 million for next season, but it was causing a substantial salary cap hit against the Falcons.

This will create more wiggle-room for the Falcons to extend Julio Jones to a substantial contract before training camp begins next week. Jones is expected to be the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL.

For Jarrett, this locks down long-term security.

Jarrett was a 5th Round Draft pick in 2015. He had three sacks against New England Patriots QB Tom Brady in Super Bowl LI, which tied a Super Bowl record.
