Mercer suffered a big loss Saturday afternoon to the Citadel dropping their first Southern Conference game of the season but also losing their starting quarterback, Robert Riddle to injury.

Mercer head football coach Bobby Lamb said on Monday's press conference that redshirt freshman starting quarterback Robert Riddle will be out a while after breaking his collarbone this past Saturday in the 38-31 loss to the Citadel.

Replacing Riddle, is the redshirt sophomore Kaelan Riley, last year's Southern Conference freshman of the year who started all 11 games for the Bears. Last year, Riley had 17 total touchdowns and threw for 13, and tossed for 2,030 yards setting a Mercer freshman record.

Riddle won the starting QB job this year after leading Mercer to a 30-24 upset win over No. 9 Samford on September 15th. In the 4 games Riddle played, he threw 6 TDs, rushed for 3, and also threw for 851 yards while accumulating a 65.35 completion percentage (66-101), and had 3 interceptions.

Riley has played in 3 games this year with two TDs, one rushing and one passing, and completing 12 of his 18 attempts with one interception.

The Bears will play VMI on the road this Saturday.
