Monroe County deputies ramp up traffic enforcement during 4-day weekend

Traffic delays and congestion are expected to hit a record level

FORSYTH, Ga. — As you celebrate Independence Day, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says they are going to be watching the roads.

13WMAZ spoke to travelers and people in law enforcement about what you can expect if you hit the highway.

"We are going to Fernandina Beach just for a couple of days. We had an opportunity to get away and that is what we are going to do," said Jennifer Bergman said at a rest stop.

Bergman said the drive is usually easy, but the extra drivers on the road make it a little hard.

"Everybody is speeding, everybody is looking at their phone," Bergman said.

That is just one reason the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is getting ready for the holiday weekend.

"Very busy, very busy. A lot of traffic out there on I-75," Sheriff Brad Freeman said.

Freeman says his deputies will be watching for drunk drivers, along with safety violations.

"Especially we are really going to be trying to focus on the distracted driving, the tailgating, and the really excessive speeding," Freeman said.

Freeman says drivers tend to speed on I-75 once the lanes increase.

"That is just a fact, it is not uncommon for us to write speeding tickets out there in triple digits," Freeman said.

Freeman wants to make sure the roads are safe for drivers like Bergman as they go to and from their destination.
