Booking flights early one way to save on holiday air travel

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's holidays are the busiest travel periods.

MACON, Ga. — In 2021, AAA predicted 6.4 million people will fly for the holiday. The motor club company will be releasing their holiday travel November 15.

Judy Norman is the owner of Classy Destinations, and she says you shouldn't wait to until the last minute to book a flight for the upcoming holiday season.

"If you are within 14 days of travel, you flights are going to be out the wazoo," Norman said.

Here are some tips to save on your holiday airfare.

1. There are multiple credit cards that offer some type of travel incentives when you sign up with their company. For example, when you apply and are approved for the Delta American Express credit card, your first checked bag is free. Meaning when you book your flight with Delta, won't have to spend the $30 for the first checked bag.

2. Norman says when you book with a travel agent, they can help you find the best deal. She says when you do a bundle, which is a flight and hotel, you can save money in the long run. Plus, the travel agents can compare prices with the vendor.

3. Travel insurance will save you a full trip from being lost. If a flight gets cancelled or you lose luggage during transit, travel insurance will help you get your money back. It's also best practice to take pictures of your luggage in case items are lost, stolen or damaged.

4. Travel to less crowded places. Traveling to places where there isn't a lot of tourists can be cheap. Norman says when people are traveling to warmer climate areas in the winter, it can get pricey.

Norman also says travel during the low season. The low season is when people are less traveling. She says the week after Christmas is not the best time to travel.
