Could something tropical form in the Gulf?

A tropical system could form in the Gulf of Mexico- just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.

The second half of May has been unsettled providing us with several opportunities to see showers and storms.

Decent rain chances continue for the rest of the week and even into Memorial Day Weekend across the entire Southeast thanks to a tropical disturbance that could develop in the Gulf of Mexico late this week.

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting an area of low pressure currently located in the western Caribbean a 40% chance (medium) of possibly developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm in the next five days once it emerges into the Gulf of Mexico.

Several models show a weak area of low pressure forming, but the odds of it intensifying into a significant system appears unlikely. If anything, it will provide additional showers and storms across the Southeast. Flooding could be a concern wherever the system travels.

According to tropical meteorologist Phil Klotzbach, there has only been four named storms that formed in the Gulf of Mexico in the month of May since record keeping began in 1851. If this system receives a name, it will be called Alberto.

Many locations across Central Georgia have recorded at least 1-3 inches of rain since May 15th. On average, Macon usually records 2.72" of rain during the month of May. We have almost met that total and will likely go above it over the next several days.

The Weather Prediction Center from NOAA is forecasting around 4" of rain for most of Central Georgia between now and next Tuesday (May 29, 2018). The amount of rainfall we can see could go up or down depending on the track and intensity of the system in the Gulf. Flooding could become an issue if the forecast totals increase. It will be something to watch.

When you break it all down, get ready for more rain over the next seven to ten days. Rain chances ramp up in the afternoon and evening hours. Rain chances still exist in the overnight and morning hours.
