Georgia State Patrol urges safe driving on Memorial Day weekend

Troopers will be concentrating on impaired drivers and seat belt violations.

As many people prepare to hit the road for Memorial Day, the Georgia State Patrol is urging drivers to be safe this holiday weekend. We spoke with a trooper and we have all the information you need to know to stay safe this weekend.

We see cars driving up and down the interstate every day, but this weekend, AAA is projecting more than one million Georgians will hit the road for Memorial Day, including Harold and Evelyn Henderson.

"Right now, we are heading up to Alpharetta because our grandson is graduating from high school," Evelyn Henderson said.

So the Georgia Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers troopers will be out on the road. The Georgia Department of Safety says more than 200 accidents causing injuries happened last Memorial Day. With rain expected, Corporal Michael Burns says drivers should be on high alert this weekend.

"We're still going to be patrolling the same area, the interstate, the side roads, the main state highways -- it's not really going to change how we patrol, it's not really going to change how people drive this holiday period," Burns said.

Burns recommends that drivers slow down when it rains and be sure to use your windshield wipers and turn your headlights on while driving. He says troopers will be focusing on drunk drivers and also cracking down on those not wearing their seatbelt.

"For some reason, some people still choose not wear a seatbelt -- it's really important to wear your seatbelt because that what keeps you safe just in case you get into a crash," Burns said.

The Georgia Department of Safety said enforcement will begin this Friday at 6 p.m. and Memorial Day at 11:59 p.m.
