Robins golf, aero clubs welcome civilians

Civilians can now get a base pass to take advantage of the Aero Club and golf course at Robins

Not many civilian pilots can say they've flown in the same pattern with F-15 jets or big C-130 planes, but Molly Dennis can.

Dennis is part of the Aero Club at Robins Air Force Base. She already has her private pilot license, but she is working toward a higher classification.

"I want to join the Air Force and be a pilot," she said.

The Aero Club is now taking off on a new venture to give anyone, even civilians, an opportunity to take to the skies over Robins.

"It's eight to 12 months start to finish," said manager Skip Piper. "We have four aircraft with six instructors, so that gives you a better opportunity to be able to book an airplane."

He says there are many benefits to joining the Aero Club for both military and non-military.

For example, Piper says they keep their instruction and rental costs low so more people have an opportunity to take flight.

If you prefer to look at planes instead of being in one, the golf course at Robins is also offering passes for non-military to take a swing.

"We're not too far from the flight line, so you'll see F-15s doing their tests and C-130s and all of the different planes that come in and out of Robins," said facilities manager and golf pro Mike Baker.

He says the course already has partnerships with a few other golf clubs in central Georgia, but now they're opening up the opportunity to anyone who wants to take a swing.

"It gets more rounds, which equates to dollars, which we can turn around and use to improve the course."

Golfers and potential pilots will need to apply for a base pass to get through the gates.
