Students deal with test anxiety during Milestones testing

Central Georgia students began Milestones testing this week and they're feeling the pressure.

At Thomson Middle School, Milestones testing is in full swing.

For some students, the pressure is more than just choosing A, B, or C.

Students look forward to closing their computers and knowing their testing session for the day is over.

For the students at Thomson, their testing just began on Tuesday.

"I mean, it's long," said seventh grader Walker Durham. "You want be the best and you want to show your teachers that you actually listened, and didn't just play around all year."

The pressure is on for other central Georgia students, and has been since elementary school.

"When we get into third grade, we have to take big tests, it's gonna be cool," recalled Durham.

Now, cool isn't exactly how Durham would describe Milestones testing.

"It'll be more challenging because we'll have more pressure in all the subjects," Durham said, "not just language arts and math."

However, licensed professional counselor James Giordanella says there are ways to close off test anxiety before closing your test -- starting with focusing on the now.

"Anxiety is kind of the fear and uncertainty of what's going to happen tomorrow and what's gonna be on that test. First off, you have to develop a positive mindset," Giordanella said.

He also said promoting positive reinforcement is key to taking the weight off student's shoulders.

"Letting them know just, 'Hey do your best, we really believe in you,' just that positive motivation," Giordanella said.

It's something that Durham's teacher, Erin Peck, practices.

"Every now and then I'll just pat them on the back and say, 'you've got this,' you know, you're doing great," Peck explained.

Giordanella also says that preparing clothes, lunch, and what will be for breakfast the night before will help with taking away extra stresses for the mornings during test week.
