Telfair County Prepares for First State Championship Appearance

The Telfair County baseball team is hoping to claim their first state title in the first championship appearance.

Tuesday is new territory for the Trojans.

"It's the first time for all of us. We hadn't talked about it," head baseball coach TJ Mercer said.

The Trojans will face off against Gordon Lee in the 1A Public State Championship and the Trojans aren't shying away from the stage.

"I don't think we are nervous. A lot of the kids on this team have played a lot of baseball, a lot of baseball over the years. So I think we've played in some pretty big games," senior shortstop Ian Blankenship said.

Before this season, the biggest game they played in? The semifinals which they reached for the first time last year, and they feel that experience evolved them into a new team.

"We got much needed experience last year in the final four and we took that experience and just hit it home," senior third baseman Ryan Dopson said.

The team is led by just 5 seniors, and they are hoping when they arrive in savannah they'll do more than just make contact in the state finals.

"I feel pretty sure it would be a big deal, these dudes deserve it. If it happens, that's a deserving bunch right there," Mercer said.

Especially since these teammates have shared the same diamond since elementary school

"We've all been playing together since we were 8,9,10,11,12 years old and it would be really big to bring home a baseball state championship especially with all the state championships coming home from other teams," Blankenship said. "I'm kind of getting a little bit jealous, so it would be good to bring one home."
