Sumter man found dead in holding cell at the Crisp County Detention Center

He was found unresponsive in a cell just after 1 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CRISP COUNTY, Ga. — A man died by apparent suicide in a holding cell at the Crisp County Detention Center on Wednesday morning, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. 

The 47-year-old Sumter County man had been arrested for a DUI and other traffic violations. He was brought into the detention center around 9:30 p.m. and was awaiting booking. 

He was found unresponsive in a cell just after 1 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation points to death by suicide. He was alone in the holding cell. The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office said there were no suspicious circumstances but they have requested that the GBI conduct an investigation. 

The name of the man has not been released.

"I offer sincere condolences to this individual's family and loved ones. I also recognize the impact occupational exposure to tragedy has on our community's first responders." Sheriff Billy Hancock said. “We have a peer support team and Chaplains who are available to assist the individual's family, our agency, and Crisp County's first responders.”
