Murder suspect Christopher Calmer sobbed in court as his ex-wife talked about his physical and mental problems and said, "I still care."
Calmer is accused of killing Monroe County Deputy Michael Norris and wounding Sgt. Jeff Wilson in 2014. The shooting happened when the two officers responded to a call that Calmer was attempting suicide at his parents' Juliette home.
He faces the death penalty in the case.
His lawyers argue that Calmer is mentally ill and not competent to stand trial.
On Thursday, the fourth day of the trial, Calmer could be heard sobbing in court as Samantha Peterson testified.
She said she met Calmer back in 1994 through a dating service in Chattanooga. Peterson said that he was charming and they married shortly after, then moved to Colorado.
During her testimony she said he started having back problems and treatments weren't working.
She said "It was very hard" to watch him suffer.
Peterson said that he changed and didn't want to do anything anymore. That's when Calmer started to cry.
She said they divorced shortly after, but added, "I still care."
She admitted during cross examination that she has not seen calmer in more than 20 years.
Even after she left the stand, Calmer continued to sob.
