ID=15731215A Monroe County grand jury on Tuesday indicted Christopher Keith Calmer on nine counts in connection with the Sept. 13 shooting death of one deputy and wounding of another.

District Attorney Richard Milam said the nine-count indictment charges Calmer of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit murder, attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault on peace officers, aggravated battery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Milam said Calmer is scheduled for arraignment on the charges July 8. He said a decision on whether he'll seek the death penalty in the case will be announced at the hearing, but Milam also said the hearing could be rescheduled.

Law enforcement officials said deputies Michael Norris and Jeff Wilson went to a house on Haley Lane in September near Bolingbroke in response to a call that someone was attempting suicide. The home belongs to Calmer's parents.

Wilson sustained two gunshot wounds, one in the leg and one in the buttocks. Authorities said his bulletproof vest kept another bullet from hitting his chest.

During the exchange, Calmer was shot in the leg.

Meanwhile, Monroe County Sheriff John Carey Bittick said he's on his way to Washington, D.C., where a memorial bearing Michael Norris' name will be unveiled at Judiciary Square. Bittick said some of the fallen deputies relatives plan to attend the ceremony.
