Jury selection underway for Calmer mental competency trial

Jury selection began Monday morning for Christopher Calmer's mental competency trial.

Jury selection began Monday morning for Christopher Calmer's mental competency trial.

Calmer stood up from his chair this afternoon and laid down on the floor of the Upson County courthouse. Shortly after, the court brought in a recliner for him to lay back in, but Judge Thomas Wilson said jury selection could proceed.

The courtroom was packed with at least 80 potential jurors and Wilson created five panels of jurors and three of them were questioned.

The defense and prosecution asked them questions. Some were about their affiliation with law enforcement and others were about being in severe pain.

All of those questions are used to determine who should be on the jury for Calmer's mental competency trial.

Calmer is accused of shooting and killing Monroe County deputy Michael Norris in September 2014.

The mental competency trial will determine if Calmer is capable of being judged for the crime he committed nearly two years ago.

Calmer's mental competency trial is scheduled to begin on August 16 in Monroe County.
