Monroe County ousts fire chief, EMA director Matt Perry

County manager Jim Hedges would not discuss why Perry is no longer employed by Monroe County.

FORSYTH, Ga. — Monroe County has ousted its fire chief and emergency management director, Matt Perry.

County chairman Greg Tapley confirmed that Chief Perry is no longer employed by Monroe County on Friday.

However, when asked why Perry is no longer employed by the county, Tapley and other Monroe County officials said, "No comment."

Officials also wouldn't say whether Perry was fired or if he chose to resign.

Shane Cook, spokesman for the fire department, said Jason Lott is now the interim EMA director and fire chief.

Cook said he didn't know how or why Perry left, and he referred other questions to county manager Jim Hedges.

Hedges was in and out of meetings with county officials Friday morning.

The main topic of discussion was how the county can move forward with Emergency Management and the Fire Department.

After those meetings, Hedges said he was too busy to discuss the matter and could not discuss personnel matters.

Perry has been fire chief for just over two years and has also served for more than 10 years as the county's emergency management director.

Tapley said the county may be able to release more information as early as Monday.

"I understand you asking and maybe follow up a little bit later on that next week or something," Tapley said.

13WMAZ reached out to Perry for comment. He did not return our calls.
