Man taken to the hospital by helicopter after car flips, travels over 500 feet from road in Perry

They say it happened near the intersection of Larry Walker Parkway and the Ball Street Extension.

PERRY, Ga. — A man in Perry was life-flighted to a hospital after driving off the road and getting trapped in his car, according to Assistant Fire Chief Kirk Crumpton with the Perry Fire Department.

Crumpton says it happened Wednesday near the intersection of Larry Walker Parkway and the Ball Street Extension.

"We had a lot to deal with," Crumpton said. "It was an all-hands working event. Everyone had something."

Firefighters had to cut their way through his vehicle in order to get him out. Crumpton said they removed the windshield and some of the roof in order to free the man from his car.

Crumpton said the car pummeled through bushes and a forested area and, at one point, the crash started a small grass fire that the department had to fight.

"It was a lot to deal with in a short period of time," Crumpton said.

The man was eventually freed from the vehicle around 12 minutes after firefighters arrived, and the man was taken to the Atrium Health Navicent by helicopter.

Right now, Crumpton says they aren't sure why the car left the roadway, but when it did, the vehicle continued to travel, overturning multiple times.

Crumpton said the car traveled over 500 feet from the roadway when it finally came to rest.

Under department policy, Crumpton says they call for a helicopter anytime someone is trapped in their vehicle.

It is unclear what the man's condition is as of now.
