UPDATE: Pulaski County's sheriff says a double homicide overnight was caused by a "drug deal gone wrong."
He also says the tip that led to suspect Dennis Penix's arrest in Macon was caused by a warning by his mother to other family members.
Sheriff Danny Brannen says investigators have learned that Penix was seen with victims Kelvin Jurand Thompson and Robdreckious Jamal Quainton sometime Monday night.
Then just after midnight, he says, Quainton was found shot to death by the side of a dirt road in Pulaski County He was shot at least four times, Brannen said.
Thompson was found in a nearby pond. Brannen says they don't know how many times Thompson was shot.
Both men were shot with a 9-millimeter handgun, the sheriff said.
He said investigators believe the three men were the only people at the scene.
Brannen said Penix's mother reached out to other family members and warned them to call 911 if her son called them or showed up.
That's why one family member called authorities Tuesday morning to report that Penix was in Macon, he said.
Brannen says deputies pulled a Jeep Liberty out of the woods near the shooting scene.
He says so far, they've not found the murder weapon.

UPDATE: 8:35 a.m; Pulaski County Sheriff Danny Brannen has identified two men found dead in the woods overnight.
He said the victims are Kelvin Jurand Thompson, age 22, and Robdreckious Jamal Quainton, age 23.
One of the men was found shot to death by the side of a rural dirt road early Tuesday and the second in a nearby pond.
He said they're investigating the case as a homicide and investigating with the GBI and the U.S. Marshal's service.
Brannen said they've identified a possible suspect, but he declined to name him. He said the suspect is currently on the loose and armed and dangerous.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called after two men were found dead on a dirt road early Tuesday morning in Pulaski County.
According to Nelly Miles with the GBI, the call came in to the 911 center around 12:19 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Miles says the two men were found near the intersection of Woods Road and Sandridge Road.
The coroner has identified both men, but is not releasing their names until the next of kin is notified.
