Update: Washington County mother killed in fire identified as Laurens County School employee

The couple's 15-year-old was flown to the burn center in Augusta

HARRISON, Ga. — A Washington County mother died Friday morning after a fire at her family’s mobile home.

According to Sheriff Joel Cochran, the call came in around 4:30 a.m. at a trailer on Wrightsville/Riddleville Road near Harrison.

He says three people were in the home at the time of the fire.

Cochran identified the deceased as 47-year-old Shelly Tanner. Her husband, Vince Tanner, was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Their 15-year-old son was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire, although it appears to be accidental at this time.

Just before 2:30 p.m., the Laurens County School District issued a statement identifying Tanner as one of their staff members.

It says: Our Laurens County School District family is grieving the loss of one of our very own. WLSGA Instructional Coach, Shelly McCoy Tanner passed away in a house fire this morning. Shelly has been a faithful member of Team Laurens since August 2008. We have been blessed by her fun-loving spirit, passion for her work and the love she showed everyone. Please keep her family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers...as we all process and navigate through her untimely death. RIP Shelly...we will love you forever.
