Ga. Dept. of Revenue fights tax fraud through quiz

While it may look like spam, the state Department of Revenue says an email they are sending around is designed to stop tax fraud.

While it may look like spam, the state Department of Revenue says an email they are sending around is designed to stop tax fraud.

In fact, a member of our 13WMAZ staff received one.

The department is randomly selecting taxpayers, then sending them an email with the subject "Your Georgia Individual Income Tax return has been suspended."

We found the email is in fact legitimate and comes within days of filing your taxes.

The sender is noreply@dor.ga.gov. That's the Georgia Department of Revenue.

The email states that if you do not complete the quiz, you may not receive your tax refund.

It instructs you to go to another website and enter a code from the email. Then you are asked for your social security number, date of birth, and the amount of your refund.

Also, if you call the number suggested on the email you hear this an automated message that says to call 877-423-6711...which is, yet another, automated message.

It may sound unusual to some taxpayers, but Scott Purvis with the Department of Revenue's Macon office says the quiz is designed to make sure the same people who file their taxes, receive their refund.

If you think you have deleted a similar email by mistake, you can contact the Macon office of the Georgia Department of Revenue at 478-471-3550.
