MACON, Ga. — A Central State Prison inmate assaulted an officer at the Atrium Health Navicent on Wednesday morning, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Carey McLeod was being taken into the hospital by a corrections officer at around 11:30 a.m. on January 3. McLeod beat up the officer and was able to get the officer’s holster.
Before he could take the gun out of the holster, another Georgia Department of Corrections officer was able to pull out her gun and ordered the inmate to drop it and lay it on the ground.
The officer who was attacked was treated for minor injuries and released. No one else was injured. McLeod was taken back to Central State Prison.
The Georgia Department of Correction said they were proud of the way their officers handled the situation.
“We are proud of our Officers and their quick actions that prevented the situation from escalating and we are also grateful to the Atrium Navicent staff for their assistance during the incident.” the email said.
McLeod is in prison after being convicted on several drug and firearms charges out of Carroll County.
