After a weeklong trial and 30 minutes of deliberating, an Upson County jury has found Christopher Calmer guilty on all charges in the 2014 killing of Monroe County deputy Michael Norris.
Throughout the trial, Calmer’s defense didn’t deny that he killed Norris. Instead, they tried to convince the jury he wasn’t mentally stable at the time of the shooting and that the sheriff’s office did not follow proper protocol.
The following is a list of Calmer’s charges:
- Malice Murder
- Felony Murder
- Felony Murder (Obstruction of a Law Enforcement officer)
- Aggravated Battery
- Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder
- Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer
- Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
The possible verdicts for each charge included: not guilty by reason of insanity, guilty but mentally ill, or guilty.
Calmer could receive the death penalty in the sentencing phase.
