Vineville Academy receives 96 new string instruments for students

Orchestra teacher Patricia Baser put in a $20,000 request for the instruments, and Bibb County Schools approved it.

With 120 new students in Vineville Academy's orchestra program, Patricia Baser said they needed new instruments.

When she realized she'd be teaching about 250 string instrument students in total this year, it struck a chord.

"I put together an order request, and I emailed Mr. Bridges, our fine arts department director, and I said, 'This kind of a big order, but this is what I'd like to get and why,' and they were like, 'OK.' and I was like, 'Wow,'" Baser said.

It was a noteworthy $20,000 request to the Bibb County School District.

New cellos, violins, violas, and bass instruments range from around $200-$400 each, but for these students, it's no "treble."

"I have many students who wouldn't even be able to try it if we didn't have the opportunity presented, so it's really great that we can offer it to everybody," Baser said.

5th grader Alayla Durham was excited when she found out she'd get her own viola. She didn't want her skills to "B-flat" at school, so it's the only way she can keep them "sharp" at home.

"I was super excited when we were taking it home. I asked my mom if I could practice every weekend, and she was like, 'No,' because I think it costs like $200," Durham said.

Nathien Lewis was also excited for his violin, but his mother thought it was more of her "forte."

"I didn't even know my mom plays it, so I have her fill out the form, so I can get my violin, and she told me once I get my violin, she'll just keep playing it," Lewis said.

Students get to take home their brand new instruments for the first time on Wednesday.
