A 6-year-old child is expected to survive injuries sustained when a mountain lion attacked Sunday near Cupertino, Calif., local officials say.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department said via Twitter that the child was attacked by a mountain lion on a hiking trail off Montebello Road in the county south of San Francisco in the Bay area.

The injuries were not life threatening, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff's deputies and officers with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were searching the area for the animal. Hiking trails in the area were closed.

Officials of the fish and wildlife agency and sheriff's department did not respond immediately to requests for further information.

While attacks are rare, mountain lions are known to be present in much of California's wilderness and are sometimes seen in areas where homes and commercial development adjoin wildlands.
