#Scene13: McEachern Art Center's new exhibit

At the art exhibit you wont know whether you may be looking at a piece of work from a biology major or an engineering student.

MACON, Ga. — Mercer student Erin Ward's art is on display at McEachern Art Center along with over 120 other works by around 75 Mercer students. Ward used everyday items to create the piece.

"It felt like bringing my environment in here was essential to displaying my work," says Ward.

Pieces of students are throughout each of their individual works. Mary O'Malley, assistant professor of art at Mercer University, says most aren't art majors.

"A ton of biology majors, engineers, neuroscience,  chemistry majors, journalism majors," explained  O'Malley.

That's the beauty of it that plays along with the name of the exhibit 'Work in Progress'. The students are still learning.

"We're not seeing a lot of unfinished pieces, but what it means is that it's a work in progress in the development of the art student," says O'Malley.

"All of the work that's in here is the work that's been done over the fall semester," says Johnny Cohen director of the McEachern Art Center.

Cohen says you can check out work being done in different courses at Mercer's art department. From sculptures, to ceramics and paintings. It's a chance for people to see the talented artists at Mercer that may be in different majors, but still taking an art class. Plus a chance for students to show off their work.

"I feel like an artist instead of just a drawer," says Ward.

Some of the art is for sale. The exhibit opens December 14th.
