Macon County couple frustrated with lack of urgency from the sheriff's office after their home was shot

The Jones family say they are frustrated with how the Macon County Sheriff's Office responded to someone shooting at them Saturday evening.

MACON COUNTY, Ga. — One family said the Macon County Sheriff's Office is not doing enough to protect people. It comes after their home and cars were shot multiple times Saturday night.

Amber Jones said only one deputy responded but didn't make a report or investigate what happened.

"I don't understand how someone can come shoot your house up and get away with it," Amber said.

Danny and Amber Jones have lived at their home in Macon County for 15 years. Since they got there, they say things have changed.

"I always felt comfortable and safe out here, but now it's different you know because now you come outside. We bring the dogs outside; I have to bring my pistol with me," Amber said.

The Jones said they now fear for their lives after being shot at Saturday evening. They were followed when they turned on their street and allegedly a man started shooting at them. One of the bullets even hit their truck.

Once they got home, they hid behind the cars for safety. Amber was on the phone with 911 and said they could hear the shots over the phone.

Even though one deputy responded to the incident, Amber said he wasn't helpful.

"He literally pulls up, takes the case off his phone, and starts cleaning his phone. He didn't write down anything — nothing. He said we'll I'm going to go see if I see him," Amber said.

Ten minutes later, Danny said the suspect drove by their house again with the deputy behind him.

"He was not in pursuit. No blue lights whatsoever," Danny said.

The Jones are left with seven bullet holes. Four in their house, two on their cars, and one on their utility building.

One of the bullet holes in their house went through the playroom and bedroom for their grandchildren when they come to visit.

Sheriff Leonard Johnson said they're looking into getting help with this case, but the Jones family said they've tried to do the same.

"Montezuma Police called me and said they called and asked the deputy if he needed back up and he said no," Amber said.

The family said they've had previous incidents with the same suspect in December 2023.

Danny and his 18-month-old grandson were run off the road when they were driving his side-by-side. Four months later, they were finally able to get warrants for the man labeled as felonies.

But their daughter-in-law, Chansie Crawford, said they had to go somewhere else for help.

"Any progress that we've made has been through the district attorney or resources that you know we've been fortunate enough that people have come to us, but without that our family would be stuck living in fear every day," Crawford said.

A deputy did return to the home Sunday morning to take photos, but the courts do not have a report from the sheriff's office about the shooting.
