FPD offers new program for homeschooled students

First Presbyterian Day School offers classes once a month for homeschooled students during the school day.

MACON, Ga. — Amber Poole says homeschooling is the best decision for her children.

"The reason that I chose to home school, my son has Asperger's, and so that was one main factor, I'm able to give him more one on one attention with him," Poole said.

Once a month, she takes them to First Presbyterian Day School to expose them to more subjects.

"My son has an interest for coding, and they have this class available so I thought it was awesome to bring him and try it out," Poole said.

Parents can sign their kids up for Keyboard and coding club, science classes and music lessons from 9 to 11 in the morning.

5th grader Emma Peisher says learning robotics is her favorite part.

"It's been really fun because I get to program robots, and I get to do coding, which is really cool to me 'cause my dad's an engineer and I want to be able to be smart and do stuff like that with him," Peisher said.

Program Director Elizabeth Leslein says they offered the program during school hours based on requests from parents in their after-school program.

Now, they have about nine students in each class.

"It's a fun atmosphere to learn with other people in their same age group, your peers, it gives them a great opportunity to learn life skills so that's some of the benefits that we see from our program," Leslein said.

She says with the affordable price, they hope more families will join.

"Each class is $15 for a session, we have a family maximum of $30, so if you have multiple children, 3 or 4, the most your family would pay for 1 session that they come onto our campus is $30," Leslein said,

Leslein says the program is open to kindergarten through sixth grade for now, but they hope to expand in the fall.

Depending on how this year goes, Leslien says they'll consider adding the program to their high school classes.
