Baldwin County woman drowns after falling in pond trying to untangle her fishing line from tree

Scott Deason with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office says it happened just before 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

MACON, Ga. — A Baldwin County woman is dead after a drowning at a pond.

Scott Deason with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office says it happened just before 10 a.m. Saturday morning at a pond off Butler Road in rural Baldwin County.

He says 72-year-old Margie Sheppard was fishing with her grandson, and her line got tangled in a tree.

When she stood up in the John boat to untangle it, she lost her balance, and fell in.

Her adult grandson who was there with her pulled her to shore and performed CPR as dispatchers gave him instructions over the phone.

Ricky Boles with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources says doctors later pronounced her dead at the hospital.
