Bibb County commissioners discuss OLOST

Bibb County commissioners say they want to avoid raising taxes for the third year and an additional penny sales tax, called an OLOST, would help.

Bibb County commissioners say they hope to avoid another budget crisis and another property-tax increase next year with a new penny sales tax.

Tuesday, commissioners heard from financial professor Greg George who says the tax called an OLOST could raise close to $30 million a year.

George says they could vote to use half of those funds to roll back the property tax and the other half to fund county programs.

Commissioner Valerie Wynn says she won't support an OLOST unless they use the full amount to cut property taxes.

"We're 'tax tired,' we've had our property taxes go up two years in a row, we got these SPLOST funds, these SPLOSTs that have been voting for these last couple of years, and I don't think the community will vote for anymore because they're 'tax tired,'" said Wynn.

The OLOST needs approval from the Georgia General Assembly and then from county voters on a ballot referendum.

The OLOST must pass the state legislature during their spring session.
