'Be patient': Central Georgia plumbers say as the temps drop they get more calls about bursts pipes

A tip that may seem odd, if you have a sink along the outside wall, open your cabinet doors so that heat can get to your pipes. a few degrees can save you hundreds.

MACON, Ga. — Lower temperatures can lead to high demand for plumbers because a cold snap can cause pipes to bust and need repairs.

Central Georgia's handymen say they're just getting started Wednesday, and things are going to get really busy as the temperatures continue to fall.

They say if you need repairs, you'll have to be patient.

Crew members from Hall Construction company started crawling under a Macon home Wednesday, answering their first cracked pipe call of the cold weather season.

"I was on my way up here to get more 2-inch water lines," Maxen Hall said walking out of Home Depot.

He is stocking up for his Wednesday call and for the next break.

"I know there will be plenty more giving me a call," Hall said.

Dennis Andrews with A1 Plumbing says their busiest hours are after lunchtime when the ice in pipes melts.

"It may be two or three days before a plumber can get to the house. Be patient. We're all doing the best we can," Andrews said.

They share a few things you can do to avoid calling them.

"Try to let your water run a little bit. If you cut off all of your nozzles, it will freeze up," Hall said.

Andrews says pipe insulation covers are helpful, but don't forget a faucet cover. It will prevent freezing, and could save you $200 in the long run.

He says if you do call a plumber for a burst pipe," have them use Pex pipe to repair the leak. Pex pipe won't freeze or bust."

Another tip to avoid problems before a cold night, fill your tub up with water and keep water bottles or jugs filled in case your water stops working. You can use it to flush your toilets, brush your teeth, or for whatever you need.

Plus a tip that may seem odd, if you have a sink along the outside wall, open your cabinet doors so that heat can get to your pipes.

A few degrees can save you hundreds of dollars.
