'I welcome the music versus the gun noises' | Neighbors react to Atrium Health Amphitheater

On Tuesday, the amphitheater had a soft opening with a test concert, but neighbors say the noise carried.

MACON, Ga. — The Atrium Health Amphitheater is officially finished and ready for sound check.

People are getting ready for the first concert, which is less than two weeks away.

On Tuesday, they had a soft opening with a test concert, but neighbors say the noise carried.

Around 9 p.m. on Tuesday night, we received a noise complaint from a viewer saying the music was too loud for a lot of the nearby seniors.

Mary Grayer lives across from the amphitheater, separated by a fence, and said she had fun watching the show from her rocking chair.

"I'm so glad something is coming back on this side of town," Grayer said.

Grayer is 86 years old and says she even cleaned the ivy off of her fence to get a closer look. She said she's looking forward to more artists coming to Macon.

"No, I'm not complaining about anything," Grayer said. "It was good music and the noise didn't bother me, maybe to some other people, yes but not me."

Lorinda Davis says she loves music of all genres, and was happy to hear something upbeat in the area.

"Well I welcome the music versus the gun noises that I hear all the time," Davis said.

Davis says the soft opening got her excited about what else the amphitheater has in store, and she looks forward to taking her family to some shows.

"We need something positive and something to give these kids and ourselves something else to do other than nothing or getting into trouble," Davis said.

With artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Anthony Hamilton coming to her backyard, Davis said the neighborhood needs this growth.

"The concerts I can't go to, I plan on sitting on my porch and listening," Davis said. "But right now, I pretty much got my tickets in advance so I'm ready."

The County sent a statement regarding the complaint: "During the design phase audio engineers were hired to determine the decibel level in the neighborhood. By facing the amphitheater away from there and toward the commercial areas, we found the noise level to be quieter than a busy Mercer University Drive."

Classic rock giants Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top will take the stage on Sunday, March 24th.

Other artists like Riley Green, Anthony Hamilton, and the Turnpike Troubadours will perform in April.

If you're planning on going to one of these concerts or others, you can get your tickets on Ticketmaster.com.
