Family sues for nearly half a million dollars after Macon woman shoots their son in head

In 2017 Elisabeth Cannon fired shots at a group of teens that she says threw rocks at her home.

MACON, Ga. — A woman who shot at teenagers for throwing rocks at her home is now being sued for nearly a half million dollars in hospital bills.

Two years ago, 15-year-old Vernon Marcus was struck in the head by a bullet from Elisabeth Cannon's gun.

Now, Vernon's mother is suing Cannon for damages.

The lawsuit says Vernon's cognitive functions, including his ability to speak, are permanently impaired.

In 2017, Cannon told 13 WMAZ she was being tormented by a group of teenage boys who continually threw rocks at her home and car.

"We didn't holler anything after them or anything. We'd just call the police and give them a description," says Cannon (2017).

Open records show Cannon called 911 34 times prior to the shooting.

"I didn't want to hit anyone in the head. I didn't want to kill anyone," says Cannon. "I just wanted this to stop. That's all we wanted."

Cannon was arrested the day after Vernon was shot. Then in March 2017. a Bibb County Grand Jury indicted Cannon on 2 counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery.

In March 2018, Cannon's trial began. A prosecutor said there was no evidence that the teens ever threw rocks at her property. Cannon pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The lawsuit also says Vernon suffered a traumatic brain injury and intracranial hemorrhage among other injuries from the shooting.

13 WMAZ asked the Marcus family and their lawyer for comment but haven't received a response.

Cannon is currently in custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections.
