ALAMO, Ga. — The National Weather Service says a low-end EF-1 tornado struck Dodge and Wheeler Counties on Thursday afternoon, the weather service confirms.
The tornado caused damage to areas around Eastman and Alamo. Viewers sent photos and video showing the damage on the ground.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado had a continuous path with maximum winds of 90 mph.
The update comes from the National Weather Service's survey team, who went to the scene and surveyed the damage to determine the severity of the storm.
Tornados are assigned to one of six categories based on what happens on the ground: EF-0 all the way to EF-5. The weather service sends surveyors to the scene to inspect damage on the ground.
According to the weather service, the EF scale is based on 28 damage indicators.
In Alamo, local officials are also taking stock and assessing the damage.
Meteorologist Alex Pry spoke with Alamo City Manager Jeffrey Floyd. He reported that the worst damage occurred in the downtown area. Branches and tree limbs were scattered around.
Floyd said an old feed and grain store faced the most structural damage, causing a cinderblock and brick wall to blow out. Sheet metal was blown all over.
They said it was like a whirlwind of debris being tossed in the air.
Overall, locals have said it was a scary few minutes, but no one was injured during the storm.
