ATLANTA — A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon on the roof of a student housing high-rise building under construction in downtown Atlanta, fire officials said.
Black smoke could be seen coming from a building off Luckie Street around 12:15 p.m. of The Legacy at Centennial, a private off-campus student housing building still under construction near Centennial Olympic Park.
"We are investigating the extent of the damage but based on what we know at this time we do not expect any material damage to the building," a spokesperson for Landmark Properties, the developer of the property said in a statement. "We take safety on our jobsites very seriously and are appreciative for the quick response of the Atlanta Fire Department and first responders."
Several roads were blocked off in the area near Ted Turner Drive and Georgia State University's campus.
Officials on scene said they were able to get it out in about 30 to 40 minutes with dozens of firefighters responding. The fire chief stated they were able to connect to standpipe systems equipped in all high-rise buildings in order to connect to hydrants on the street level to utilize water distribution as quickly as possible to the 30th floor, where firefighters in the building were able to connect to extinguish the fire on the roof.
Officials also added that there were no injuries reported. Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
