Macon church concert gives scholarships to grieving families

The scholarships will go to the children of families who have recently suffered tragedy.

Macon — Georgia Curry has done what no mother should ever have to do.

She had to bury her child.

"She ended up losing her life, trying to save someone else's life," Curry said.

In April, Curry lost her daughter, April Curry, in a tragic car accident.

As April was driving along Recreation Road, she swerved to avoid two pedestrians and struck a tree.

April was pronounced dead on the scene and left seven kids behind, five of which are now cared for by her mother.

On Sunday night, Curry received a little help from New Fellowship Baptist Church in Macon.

The church's annual "Macon Sunday Best" concert generated enough funds to provide 15 scholarships valued at $500 to families like the Currys who've experienced loss.

"People are dropping out of school for numerous reasons, for no moneys, and this organization is doing its part to try and fix it, where money will not be an issue," said Pastor Bobby Walker of the church.

Each one of Curry's grandchildren will receive a scholarship, and $1000 will be given to James Burdette, who lost his brother, Christian, at High Falls State Park last year.

The concert was put together by Deacon Wallace Adside, who heard of the Curry's tragedy.

"He said it fell on his heart that she had seven children, and she lost her life like that, and he had to do something for the children," Curry said.

Curry said the scholarships will go a long way in helping her take care of her grandchildren.
