Beware of callers claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. It's a scam.

According to a news release, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office says people may call, demand money and tell someone if they don't pay, they will send local law enforcement to arrest them.

The release says the caller may know information about you through the internet and social media. If someone doesn't answer the phone when they call, they may leave an "urgent" callback request. The release also says they use fake names and fake IRS identification information.

Some tips to have citizens recognize these scams, according to the release, are:

  • The scammer demands immediate payment
  • Demand payment of taxes without giving someone the opportunity to question the amount they say someone owes
  • Ask for debit and credit card numbers over the phone
  • Demand you use a specific payment method for someone's taxes
  • Make threats to have someone arrested by local law enforcement if someone doesn't pay

Keep in mind, the release states, the IRS has procedures in place for people with tax issues. Do not give any payment information if someone calls claiming to be from the IRS and demanding money. Any questions or concerns? Call the IRS office directly and follow up with them.

Please call the sheriff's office at 478-751-7500 or local law enforcement to report the incident.
