Another fatal stabbing at Central State Prison in Macon, marking second death in 2 days, coroner says

On Sunday, another inmate was stabbed to death in Central State Prison. Georgia's state prisons have been under a DOJ investigation since 2021.

MACON, Ga. — An inmate was killed in a stabbing at Central State Prison in Macon-Bibb County on Monday afternoon, according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

He says that 26-year-old Maquis Johnson was stabbed at Central State Prison at 3:42 p.m., and he was pronounced dead at Atrium Navicent's trauma center at 4:37 p.m.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Johnson was sentenced to 20 years in prison for an armed robbery in Muscogee County. The latest he would be released is July 2037.

Johnson's killing comes one day after another man, 28-year Hollis Bryant, was stabbed multiple times Sunday at the state prison on Fulton Mill Road in Macon. Jones told 13WMAZ that Johnson was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m. on Sunday at Atrium Health.

Since 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice has been probing conditions at Georgia's state prisons.

A press release from the DOJ says the investigation will "examine whether Georgia provides prisoners reasonable protection from physical harm at the hands of other prisoners."

The DOJ's Civil Rights investigation has run into road bumps, with the DOJ taking the Georgia Department of Corrections to court in 2022 claiming they failed to provide basic details and documents about how many inmates were killed in Georgia's jails.

We've reached out to the Georgia Department of Corrections for comment on Johnson's death. We have not heard back yet.

Jones says that an autopsy is planned for tomorrow at the GBI crime lab.

The Georgia Department of Corrections says Johnson's death is being investigated by the Office of Professional Standards, and no additional details are available.
