What led up to a man being killed by a stranger at a family gathering this weekend

Miguel Zamudio, 41, was in front of a home, visiting family in Holland when a man he did not know approached and shot him in the head. He later died at the hospital.

HOLLAND, Mich. — A man is dead after a shooting in Holland, the Department of Public Safety says.

Officers were called to the 300 block of West 19th Street around 2:15 p.m. Saturday on a report of a person shot.

Police found a 41-year-old man, identified as Miguel Raul Zamudio, in the driveway of a home with a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers transported Zamudio to the hospital. He was pronounced dead on Sunday.

Police quickly located the suspect, 27-year-old Jerell Alexander Lindsey, in a home adjacent to where Zamudio was found. Lindsey told police there was a bomb and other explosives in the home.

Nearby homes were evacuated. ATF bomb technicians came to the scene to check the home, but found no signs of explosives.

Police later determined Lindsey had no connection to the home he was found in.

Investigators say Zamudio was visiting family and they were gathered outside a home when Lindsey approached. Zamudio's family noticed he was holding a gun and began running inside the home for safety.

Lindsey continued to approach and shot Zamudio in the head. He did not know Zamudio, officers say.

Police say prior to the fatal shooting, Lindsey has been involved in a domestic incident at his home on Harrison Avenue. He pointed a gun at his girlfriend, who fled from the home, according to police.

Lindsey is charged with open murder. He was arraigned Monday and denied bond.

A GoFundMe was created to support Zamudio's family amid the unexpected loss. You can find it here
