Metro Atlanta 10-year-old to compete in national spelling bee

The fourth-grade student is heading to Maryland to compete.

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Students at Austin Elementary School are celebrating one of their classmates who is gearing up to represent Georgia in the Scripps National Spelling Bee later this month.

Fourth-grader Sarv Dharavane won the 63rd annual Georgia Association of Educators state spelling bee in March, and now he's heading to Maryland for the national spelling bee.

His advice to other students wanting to expand their vocabulary is to read -- a lot.

"Read your books, all the books. And I'm talking to all the kids who are going to be watching this," Dharavane said. "Read your books! If you don't read books, you're never going to get anywhere."

The Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place on May 28.
