'Caught up doing things wrong': Neighbors who grew up with one escaped inmate describe him as a kid

Folks around the listed addresses for Chavis Stokes and Johnifer Barnwell say neither of them have lived there. Marc Anderson's was correct, but outdated

MACON, Ga. — Vaughn Crawford said seeing an old friend is nice, but he didn't think it'd be on the news for a prison escape.

“It was definitely shocking, especially knowing that it was Marc who I grew up with,” Crawford said.

He grew up with Marc Anderson on Knightsbridge Road in East Macon.

“He was like a little brother to me growing up," Crawford said. "Just a typical kid from the neighborhood.”

Crawford says he remembers that they played basketball together and hung out with friends.

“He was a smart kid,” Crawford said. “He was always flashy and had all the latest stuff, so we'd go over to his house and play all his games.”

He said Anderson moved away when he was 16 and hasn’t seen him since.

That is until Monday when Anderson's mugshot became plastered on TV screens across Central Georgia after he escaped from the Bibb County Jail with three other inmates.

“I think it was at home when I saw the article. It just didn’t seem real,” Crawford said.

Family friend Arthur Holmes says he didn't know Anderson that well, but he was a good kid.

“I think he just got caught up doing things wrong,” Holmes said. “I don’t think he hurt nobody, I hope he doesn't hurt nobody. I just continue hoping that he turns himself in, stops running, and just do what's right."

People who live around the listed addresses for Chavis Stokes and Johnifer Barnwell say the two don't live around those areas.

There's now a combined $73,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of all four. That's from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, Macon Regional Crimestoppers, The U.S. Marshal's office, and the most amount of money offered is from the FBI.
