New "Graffiti Wall" hangs in Macon to encourage expression and cut down on vandalism

The "Graffiti Wall" hangs in an alley near First Street and Cotton Avenue, where anyone can legally spray paint on the side of a building.

For anyone who's ever had the curiosity to play around with spray paint, now there's a place to do it legally.

In Macon, near First Street and Cotton Avenue, "The Graffiti Wall" hangs in the alley and is open to the community to practice their artistic skills or to just have some fun with spray paint.

The 567 Center for Renewal partnered with local professional photographer Mark Thompson on the project to encourage mural artists to express themselves in a legal, public space.

"Giving these people an actual legal space to hone and play with their craft would help both diminish the graffiti marks in downtown Macon and make this place a space that's positive and fun for people," said 567's Fine Arts Director Colin Penndorf.

Plans for the project started in September 2017 when the entire alleyway was vandalized with vulgar writing and explicit symbols.

Penndorf said with the designated white canvas on the wall, people will have a legal place to spray paint, which may decrease the illegal vandalism around the city and shed a more positive light on graffiti art.

There are rules to the graffiti wall posted next to the canvas.

It states profanity, racial slurs, gang symbols or painting outside of the canvas is prohibited. If the rules are broken, organizers will cover it with white paint.

Thompson funded the project and hopes the wall will encourage other business owners to hang one on the sides of their buildings.
